Description
This is a lovely Art Deco 'cube' silver-plated three-piece tea set made by Marples. Wingfield & Wilkins of Sheffield in England, made in the early 1930's. It is depicted in the strictest angular Deco style with all form and function compressed into a simple cube. It is depicted in the mentioned cubic form , flush lid, Bakerite handle and tapering 'Odeon' knop, while the base is stamped with the 'M.M & W ' Reliable mark.Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins had showrooms at Bartlett’s Buildings, Holborn Circus. They were described as ‘silversmiths, who specialise in hand-hammered pewter, which is one of the most attractive and artistic products of the craft’ (Sheffield Daily Independent Industrial Supplement, 30 December 1937).
Wilkins died on 17 January 1939, leaving £625. By 1948, it was a limited company in Fitzwilliam Street. Its last business address was Sidney Street, until it was struck off the register in 1964.
